Saturday football
BURNLEY vs ARSENAL (1230 ko)
Arsenal are still – just – in with a chance of European qualification, although that will take a mighty turnaround in both form and fortunes. Burnley have no such concerns, as they remain within touching distance of the bottom three. One place up and one place down is the best and worst that both sides can manage over this weekend, but you fancy the visitors to show their superior class here today. Away win.

SHEFFIELD UNITED vs SOUTHAMPTON (1500)
The Blades are at last showing a glint of the steel that kept them up last year. The Saints are in freefall – but they’re better than their recent form suggests. This may not be the best time for them to visit Yorkshire, but an early goal would do much to settle their nerves and put them on course to halt the downturn. Sheffield on the other hand will look to this with glee. A win would take them off the bottom of the table. Draw.

ASTON VILLA vs WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS (1730)
Orroight? Grealish is still probably unavailable for Villa, who missed him badly in their defeat at Bramall Lane. Wolves haven’t reached last year’s heights and look set for another mid-table finish this season. Draw.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs LEICESTER CITY (2000)
Three points and a game in hand is Brighton’s advantage over the bottom three at the start of play. Leicester have a spate of injuries to key players and their current third spot looks far from impregnable. So there is much riding on this game for both sides, which should make for a competitive encounter. Away win.

**SUNDAY**

WEST BROMWICH ALBION vs NEWCASTLE UNITED (1200)
A true six-pointer to usher in Sunday lunch. The Barcodes – an epithet that arguably applies more to West Brom these days – have been sucked into the dogfight by an extended string of poor results and another defeat today could see them fall into the bottom three. Allardyce and Bruce are unlikely to serve up a feast of football, but this could still be an engaging contest. Home win.

LIVERPOOL vs FULHAM (1400)
Fulham on the up, Pool on the down. Who’s have thought it? Scott Parker’s side will give anyone a game and they’ll fancy their chances of coming away with something today. Few other people will, though. Home win.

MANCHESTER CITY vs MANCHESTER UNITED (1630)
The media have been creaming themselves about this. A City win – as is likely – would make the battle for second all the more interesting. Blue moon, you saw me standing alone, blah blah. Home win.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs CRYSTAL PALACE (1915)
Palace have an irritatingly obstinate streak about them, which they may choose to exhibit once again this evening. Wilfred Zaha returns for them, but Palace still have key injury problems. With Delle Ali and Bale starting to shine for Spurs, it would take a brave man to foresee anything but a home win.

**MONDAY**

CHELSEA vs EVERTON (1800)
A vital encounter in the hunt for a good European spot. Everton have clawed their way back up the table and just one point now separates them from their hosts. For us, a draw would take one point out of the equation, but there’s the sense that Chelsea will probably be just a bit too strong for their visitors. Home win.

WEST HAM UNITED vs LEEDS UNITED (2000)
Leeds have all but secured another season in the top flight. For many, this fixture is redolent of muddy pitches, full-blooded aggression and top class footballers of the 1970s. But for all its sweet perfume, redolence is a ghost, a sanitised remembrance of what once was. There will be no Bremner or Hunter or Lorimer on display here this evening, nor a Best or Moore or Hurst. Instead, there will be a team with skill and fight and, above all, with the kind of claret and blue spirit that we haven’t seen for a generation or more: a team of 21st century heroes-in-waiting ready to stake their claim for the highest ever Premier League finish. Leeds are no pushovers, we’ve seen that. On their day, they can match the best. So this has the makings of a classic encounter between two of the league’s fittest teams, one that could put us back into the top four. This will be football purist’s game of football, and will not be without goals. Home win.

**WEDNESDAY**

MANCHESTER CITY vs SOUTHAMPTON (1800)
Home win.

Re: FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTIE
Pleased to see that 94th minute equaliser for Newcastle even though I’d like to see them go down.

Hopefully Villa are out of the European picture now.

Winston Reid up at Blackburn tonight for Brentford.

He will either be MOTM or limp off around the 60 minute mark.

Saw the incident on SSN
Not sure where the dismal Jon Moss was positioned but given he has missed it the VAR should correct that easily. At least by sending him to the screen. Stonewall pen obviously
As Souness said , refs are making shit decisions and their shit mates are backing them up

This isnt about VAR its about shit refs
Watched the Juve v Porto game and the players were in the refs face and trying to cheat but the ref (Dutch , Bjorn Kuipers?) kept control, showed authority and got everything right

Re: Saturday football
Foden did go down, but he was too eager to try and score, which is to be admired, but probably not in the modern game, given how bent it is.

Re: Saturday football
As I have said before you never get a pen if you are standing up, so it's very obvious why players go down, yet folk on here still bitch and moan about it. Doubt Foden will be doing that again.

Re: Saturday football
The quality of officials in this country at the moment is a disgrace.

Game is shit as well, as that challenge proved that you only get anything for exaggerating/cheating nowadays.

Fair play on Foden for not flopping like a cunt, but with decent refs and the cunt that is var he shouldn't need to.

That looked an absolute nailed on pen.

Re: Saturday football
Spurs beat a proper shit Palace team.......i still think we should aim to finish above them

Mourinho is shit and Bale will get injured soon. If we win tonight then id be gutted to finish below them

We have to aim for 4th and hope we end up 6th

Re: Saturday football
Agree Mr Oxsaw, that is what most of us believe deep down I would think.

This season has been very encouraging and we look to have really progressed but for us to start believing this is a long term culture change, permanent and a new West Ham we need to see the same steely, determined, hard to beat West Ham doing this for many seasons. As you say, with West Ham, when things start improving, the feeling of impending doom develop at the same time. :-)

All that said, the run in this season is not the usual anxious experience so we should enjoy it whatever happens.

So as I thought you didn't even know what you meant. And you really shouldn't attempt humour, Oxsaw, really not your thing, fella.

Imagine one or more of the wheels falling off your wife's Triang toy tricycle, manual. it will make her progress following you around that much more difficult.

Manuel 9:07 Mon Mar 8
Re: Saturday football
Genuine question, Oxsaw, was exactly does the cliched 'wheels fall off' actually mean? How is it defined? We will start losing every week?? If not, what does it mean?

Mike Oxsaw 9:02 Mon Mar 8
Re: Saturday football
Like many on here, have been following our beloved for many, many decades.

This season has certainly lifted my spirits, but (and there's always a "but"), THAT thought just won't leave: "The wheels WILL fall off."

So ingrained is it that it's a de facto standard for my thoughts on following the team, and I know (KNOW) it WILL happen.

Re: Saturday football
As I said before just want to see us finish the season off playing good football. wherever that takes us we will see.

Don't want to see us giving another Liverpool type of performance.

Also I did say Fulham looked the best of those down the bottom. The might now stay up, think if they do it will be at the expense of Newcastle.

Re: Saturday football
If we finish 6th then Moyes deserves manager of the year. I’m still of the opinion 10th or above is a great season. Most people (me included) thought we’d really struggle this year and might actually drop finally.

Re: Saturday football
I’ll be happy to finish above Spurs, wherever that may be. Can’t slip up tomorrow.

claretandbluedagger 11:07 Sun Mar 7
Re: Saturday football
Spurs’ next six league games include Arsenal, Villa, Everton, and City away, and Man Utd at home. Plus they’ll be focusing on the Europa. Wouldn’t go writing us off just yet.

RBshorty 11:05 Sun Mar 7
Re: Saturday football
Teams like Palace. Wolves. And hopefully Leeds are already on the beach. Ain’t getting dragged into the relegation dogfight. But not too bothered about fighting for Europe. (Bit like the French.) So they ain’t going to put up much of a defence against anyone who shows a bit of strength. (Again. The French.)

As for Spurs and their muggy fans. I’ve missed the delusional musings that is usually spoken by their faithful following. Now that Liverpool are full on. With their train crash. We need someone else to laugh at.

fraser 10:55 Sun Mar 7
Re: Saturday football
Who knows where we'll finish. It's not about how well the others do it's about how well we do and we've had a knack of picking up points. Who's to say it won't continue.

Looking forward to finding out.
